💩 Ever Have Your Pup Poop Indoors? 💩
So you got a puppy! Bringing a new little cutie home is like a burst of sunshine mixed with a whole lotta chaos! One of the first hurdles every puppy owner faces is potty training… But don't worry—we're here to guide you through it with some tried-and-true tips and an in-depth schedule that will have your pup doing its business in the right place in no time!
☀️ Understand Your Puppy's Schedule ☀️
Just like human babies, puppies do best on a regular schedule. They usually need to go:
First thing in the morning: Right after they wake up.
After each meal: Puppies digest quickly!
After napping: Even those short dozes.
During and after playtime: All that excitement gets things moving!
Right before bedtime: To help them (and you!) sleep through the night.
Keep a diary if you need to at first. It's all about understanding their little signals and timing. But if you are looking for a more sought out schedule, this is one that you can follow to the T:
6:00 AM: Wake Up & Potty Break
Start the day with a trip outside to the potty area.
Praise and reward your puppy when they go!
6:30 AM: Feeding Time
Feed your puppy their first meal of the day.
Follow up with a quick potty break about 15-30 minutes after eating.
7:00 AM: Play & Training Time
Engage in a short training session using positive reinforcement. Focus on basic commands like “sit,” “stay,” and “come.”
Play with your puppy to burn off some energy.
8:00 AM: Quiet Time/Crate Time
Help your puppy settle down in their crate or a quiet area to encourage a nap.
Puppies need a lot of sleep, so let them rest undisturbed.
10:00 AM: Potty Break & Short Walk
Take your puppy out for a bathroom break and a short walk for some exercise.
12:00 PM: Feeding & Potty Time
Lunchtime! Follow the meal with another potty break.
1:00 PM: Play & Training Session
Another opportunity for training and play. Introduce new toys or puzzles to keep things interesting.
2:00 PM: Nap Time
Time for another nap in their crate or a designated quiet area.
4:00 PM: Potty Break
After nap, it’s time for another trip outside.
5:00 PM: Feeding Time
Dinner time followed by a potty break.
6:00 PM: Family Time
Let your puppy spend time with the family, learning to socialize and interact.
7:30 PM: Last Play Session
Engage in gentle play and another training session to tire them out for the night.
8:30 PM: Final Potty Break
Last call for the night to go outside.
9:00 PM: Bedtime
Settle your puppy down in their crate or sleeping area for the night.
It’s best to keep the schedule as tight as possible, but as you start to see consistent success, you can dial back your strictness. Your carpets will thank you!
🤷♀️ Handle Accidents Like a Pro 🤷♀️
Accidents happen, and it's important not to make a big fuss about it. Never punish your puppy. Instead, if you catch them in the act, say a firm "no" and immediately take them to their potty spot. Clean any mishaps thoroughly with an enzymatic cleaner to remove odours that might attract them back to the same spot.
😆 Be Patient and Keep Your Sense of Humour 😆
Potty training is a process. It might take several weeks, and there will be good and bad days. The key is consistency and patience. Remember, every little accident is another story for the "ol’ puppy days"!
Fun Fact: Did you know puppies can only hold their bladder for one hour every month? So, a three-month-old puppy should be taken out every three hours!
Potty training your furry friend is a bonding experience—it's about communication and learning together. Stick with it; before you know it, your puppy will be letting you know exactly when they need to go out. Happy training!
Be sure to share this with anyone you know who is about to get a puppy and could use a helping hand!
